Question about Websites
#1
Hi all, I recently had some business cards made by VistaPrint as I got tired of hand-making every individual one from scrap-booking materials lol. With the cards they offered me a website built by them to match the design of my cards. They said it was free for a one month trial and then around $7 per month after that.
Apparently I would be able to upload all my pics to it and edit any information whenever I wanted.

As I am not that computer-literate, I thought I would ask here - how do you all get your websites? Is VistaPrint a good way to go to create a website? They also offered for me to register my name through them - is that a good idea?

My Uncle is a web designer and I wondered if maybe I should just get a page created by him. Having said that, the VistaPrint deal sounds good I just don't know how good the page would be...... Help!
Plus I noticed people interested in my bears tend to "google" all the time for my name and my bears, and can't find me. The worst thing is there are other results for "joyful bears" and they generally shop with those results as that was all they could find. My bears are completely different from Joyful Bears, and I'd like for my customers to find me when they look for me - for that I need a website.

Websites are a whole new kind of animal and the best thing is to own your name and web address first then work out what you want to do. You can get a blog to start with and direct your web address (name) to that and of course you an have a free blog.I would suggest you start with that.

I'm not very good with comps either.
But my sosn inlaw does things from 3D animation, IT and web design. So when he gets here I'm gonna ask him to sort a site out for me. But make it for a dummy ha ha haSmile

I would contact your uncle, Gabriele and see what he says first, he should be able to help you get your website up and your domain. Andama's is a great idea though and you can get heaps of free blog templates Smile

If you're still thinking about this, another possibility is Wix. They host free websites. http://www.wix.com/
You can choose any layout you want from any of their free templates and just upload your own pics and info. There are step by step instructions as you go along. You can also add music to your home page and set your site to show up in Google with certain key word searches. You can also upgrade to have a fee paying Wix site later on if you want.

i have several websites - i have dreamhost as my host - that costs me about $100 a year then i pay about $10 a year PER domain name - so i have 3 websites - costing me 130 ish a year.

basically 2 are blog based - one is a full on blog one is not a blog but uses a blog interface (its an information type one) and the other is a webstore - all thru wordpress (i think the shop may not be??? cant rememeber)

you can get free templates or pay for them - they are relatively easy to set up and get going - if you stick to the wordpress templates that they have available its so much easier than being a think your so smart and trying to be all clever! (hours of stress ok!)

i have total control over my sites - i can choose to add advertising, im not made to have advertising cause its free, i can change a template colour if a change is doable (if its a all out arty high graphic page then your limited in what you can do to change it)

there are a number of designers who will get it all set up and running for you - i know of a couple - one i highly recommend (ok shes a mate! lol) and her prices are reasonable considering what i have seen!!! she will do blog, page, store what ever you just tell her. (shes also graphic design artist.... and can create from scratch a site specifically for you.)

I had mine done ( a free web ) by a lady called Natalie,
I paid £35.00 and she charges me £3.00 every time she changes
anything, but I can change a lot for that. I just sent her an
email with my pictures on.

Thanks so much everyone for all your help and I'd like to set up a blog at some point too so I'll look into the different sites etc you've all recommended as I like to see what others have used and know works.

I have my website up and running now and the link to it is attached underneath my sig so feel free to drop in and have a look however it's still got a long way to go! I have a list of changes I want to make that are a mile long so please keep in mind if you spot something that's not quite right it's probably on my list ~ however if it's a major spelling mistake etc chances are I've missed it so please feel free to point out things you'd change if it were you. After all, it has to look good to the majority of people browsing it not just me! So please feel free to share feedback. Smile

Thanks all for the in-put!!
