First attempt at sculpture-yikes!

This is my first attempt at sculpting a head so be nice!Tongue Next time I will go off a picture rather than just what I see in my head IYKWIM

The white patches are where i have sanded the clay. Note the while flecks? They were all over the head after baking creating a big problem!

And now painted. It looks crappy because the clay cracked and so the paint needed to be layered on thickly which of course you can't do with the genesis paints or they look chalky but I am impatient and couldn't wait to make a mould (how do you do that by the way??)

So my questions are:

How do I prevent the clay from getting those all over tiny cracks where the clay has been smoothed? They really spoiled the whole result.

How do you attach hair to a hard clay head? Do I have to make a mould? If so, how do I do so? I searched high and low and info on this was near impossible to find. Frustrating because a mould would be the solution to the above problems in that a cast wouldn't pick up the cracks in the clay so no think paint necessary, therefore no chalky result and I could hand root hair too!

Hi Lotus,

Well outside of the problems you have with this head the actually baby looks great with wonderful features. I have no idea about any of the questions you have asked, however I shall have a look and see if I am able to find any of the information you are after.

Cheers

RE: First attempt at sculpture-yikes!

wow for your first sculpt that is amazing I think you may just have a natural talent there. Did you use a head mould or did you do it free hand?
I think you root the hair when the clay is still wet but don't quote me on it
I wish I could sculpt

lotus

there are some online places you can enter sculpting competitions. i think theres a place in sydney or melbourne thats holding a comp soon. i got a newsletter on it but i cant find it (damm messy desk).

the winner gets their kit produced in vinal as a kit, and gets to pick the people they want to reborn the proto types as well.

have a look for sculpting comps in australia.

RE: First attempt at sculpture-yikes!

Wonderful sculpt.

As for the cracking one reason could be that the hollow for the inside of the head wasn't sufficient to allow the air to vent to the outside properly. This means that the inner air pressure is higher than the outer and this can lead to cracks. The only only other I could think of would be that the clay lack enough moisture to prevent the cracks.

Practise makes perfect, but still you made a fantastic first attempt Lotus, a true craftswoman
